FIF - Flow Inverted Filtration

NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR MECHANICAL FILTRATION

BENEFITS & SAVINGS

COMPARED TO STD SAND FILTER

EGMA - Studio Ass.to di M. Gandola & E. Bana and WET (Water Edge Technologies di Marco Rognoni www.wetbyrognoni.com) are experts in process calculation and new technologies for industrial water treatment.

EGMA and WET are pleased to jointly present New Technology of fine filtration, as an appropriate method to replace the sand filtration most conveniently, in a large number of working conditions.

This new technology is named FIF - Flow Inverted Filtration.

New Technology is based on the filtration through an Inert Bed of Floating Grains, typically Polypropylene PP of specially designed specific gravity.

FIF is a technology conceived by Marco Rognoni and subsequently refined with the contribution of Mauro Gandola, in particular for the development of PP filtering aggregate, for its selection and its appropriate preconditioning.

FIF - Flow Inverted Filtration Technology was at the time covered by patent.

The filtrating bed naturally float, and the raw water flow is upwards, thus compacting the bed for the most effective filtration. The capacity of filtration is quite the same as achieved in the sand filtration, being the size of grains approximately the same. A large number of valuable advantages are however ensured by this technology (FIF) mainly in the backwash as detailed in the paragraphs here below and summarized as follows:

BENEFITS

  • No compressed air consumption is necessary during the backwash and therefore no blowers are to be installed and maintained

  • Very limited consumption of backwashing water is necessary, with up to over 90% water saving. Hence no additional sedimentation tank is necessary for the eventual recovery of the excess of backwashing water

  • No forced water flow is necessary for backwash and therefore no backwash pumps are to be installed

DESIGN PARAMETERS & OPERATING CONDITIONS

Upon request EGMA & WET are available to provide all information for the design, with specific assessments on a case-by-case basis, including suggested operating conditions.

FIF AND STD SAND FILTERS COMPARISON

PILOT TEST

The pilot filter is constructed with the shell in transparent material for the full visibility of the filtration and backwash. The filter is sized Ø = 500 mm and filled with 85 litres of PP grains.

PP filling screen size In let Turbidity in two different arrangements

150 mm = grains 5.0 mm Agricultural humus commercially available

150 mm = grains 0.9 mm Dosing up to 10 l/m3

100 mm = grains 0.6 mm Precoat Cellulose calibrated 13 μ

200 mm = grains 5.0 mm Dosing up to 5 l/m3

The degree of filtration is assessed excellent with the entirety of turbidity and filtrated in both the arrangements.

The procedures of initial stratification of the PP grains according to the dimension of the grains is carefully studied, and as well the procedures of backwash are assessed.
